Over one hundred years ago, June 11, 1911, a committed group of sixteen believers came together and organized a Baptist church in Hawkins, Texas. They met in the old frame school building on the West side of town. Two of those members, P.A. Thorn and R.B. Smith, were ordained as deacons and Rev. J.W. Truss was called to be their first Pastor.
Over the next 2 years, the church was able to build their first building and God allowed it to provide a place of worship for the next thirty-four years. In this period of time a variety of ministries began, such as a Training Union, Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU), and Vacation Bible School. They also opened a church library.
Over the years, First Baptist Church has developed more areas to serve and invest in the community. Through mission work, service to the community, and providing a safe place for the community to gather, First Baptist Church seeks to build the kingdom of God right here in Hawkins, Texas.
The story is still continuing and we're excited to see what God accomplishes with this part of His church over the next hundred years! Let's keep building the legacy for the glory of God.
